Suicide rates from social media influence
Resources used :
Brief summary: Social media has a much more negative impact on girls than it does boys, the reason for this appears to be because of how girls think and act in our society. Also the influence of technology and the big idea that everyone has a mobile phone with social media by a very young age.
Brief summary of what I've learnt: Girls tend to be affected more by social media usage as they tend to use social media in a different way to boys. Boys are more interested in porn and gaming whereas girls are more invested in the content of social media, connecting, cliques, gossip. The issue being girls are very likely to compare themselves to other girls, before social media was a thing girls would compare themselves to the other teenagers they saw around them. Where now girls compare themselves to other people on social media, women who may be much older than them or more developed. Also the editing and different angles and photoshop used, there's a multitude of ways to alter your appearance to appear more socially desirable and this is an issue when girls look at edited photos believing that's the normal .
What I was hoping to find out: I was hoping to find out the negative effect of social media influence on teenagers, specifically focussing on girls and why it is affecting them so much. The influence of social media is clearly affecting girls more than boys, so why is this. Is it a specific aspect of social media that affects girls more, or does the whole concept of it affect them more because of the expectations of society.
Reliability of source: The hybrid magazine is a highly respected source which is celebrated for its progressive and liberal politics. The piece may be slightly bias in terms of the language used, but in terms of the statistics used they are reliable.
